Mattress sale shopping advice

Of course, just because the price is good, that doesn't mean the mattress with the biggest discount is the right choice for you. So how do you decide on what's the best deal for your sleep preferences?

Our guide to the best mattresses on the market has the full lowdown on what to look out for before you shop, but if you can't test out your mattress in store before you buy (or even if you can, because a 5 minute lie down in a showroom is still very different to a full night's sleep) our top tip would be to look for a mattress that comes with a sleep trial.

Mattress retailers have become quite competitive about offering fairly lengthy sleep trials so you can fully test out your preference before you commit. 100-day+ trials are now fairly common, just make sure to check the small print before you shop for any terms and conditions.

When to shop

Although good mattress discounts can crop up at any time of year, most retailers tend to follow a pattern when running promotions, with the biggest mattress discounts likely to fall at a few key times of year. We've collated a quick guide to the key dates to look out for below.

Black Friday mattress deals

The term 'Black Friday' originated in the US to denote the first day following Thanksgiving when retailers would cut prices to draw holidaymakers to shop their store's sales. Driven by global brands, the price-slashing event soon crossed the pond, and now Black Friday – closely followed by Cyber Monday – has become one of the UK's biggest consumer extravaganzas, rivaling traditional Boxing Day sales.

Often hailed as the biggest shopping day of the year, Black Friday always falls on the last Friday of November, so the next time it will roll around is Friday 24th November 2023.

That said, in recent years, the event has spread to encompass more than just one day, with retailers starting Black Friday discounting earlier and earlier so that a full Black Friday 'week' of discounts isn't uncommon. Last year, we even saw retailers running Black Friday promotions throughout the whole month of November.

Whether or not you agree with the rampant consumerism Black Friday has now come to represent, there's no denying it can be a great time for Black Friday mattress deals and Cyber Monday mattress deals. Last year, there were some fantastic Black Friday mattress deals with up to 50% off a whole host of bestselling brand names, including Simba, Emma, Silentnight, and more.

We'll be keeping our eye out for all this year's top Black Friday mattress deals and Cyber Monday mattress deals as they drop right here, but make sure to bookmark the Ideal Home Black Friday home deals page too so you get alerts for all the biggest Black Friday homeware sales as they launch.

Boxing Day mattress deals

If you're done with the turkey and ready to nab a bargain, then you'll usually find some great Boxing Day mattress deals just after Christmas. In fact, in recent years, Boxing Day mattress deals have started well before Boxing Day itself, with stores increasingly offering discounts as soon as their pre-Christmas shipping dates have passed.

January mattress deals

Hang on a bit longer than Boxing Day, and you might find an even lower price if the mattress you have your eye on is included in the January mattress deals most brands offer.

Retailers know most of us are a strapped for cash in January thanks to Christmas spending, so there can be some good discounts on offer during this month to tempt us all into continuing to spend.

If a retailer wants to shift stock for the new season, then January mattress deals on end-of-line products can also get bigger as the month continues. However, if a mattress is being discounted because it's a discontinued line, then waiting does run the risk that the product may sell out before it drops to its lowest price.

Amazon Prime Day mattress deals

It may not be the first place you'd think of looking for a mattress, but if you need an option that's both a low price and comes with super quick delivery then Amazon is well worth a try. Plus, Amazon Prime Day – the brand's yearly price-slashing event – can mean some great Prime Day mattress deals.

In 2023, Prime Day mattress deals ran from the 11th to the 12th of July and the 10th to the 11th of October, with significant discounts at both the Emma Amazon storefront and Simba Amazon storefront.

After two Prime Day deals events in 2023, we're now not expecting to see another Prime Day until 2024. Potentially in July 2024 based on the timing of previous years. Nothing is confirmed yet, but keep an eye on our Amazon Prime Day deals page for all the latest news and best deals as they launch.

In the meantime, you could sign up for Amazon Prime membership so you're all set to shop when the next Prime Day mattress deals take place. Generally, you need to be a Prime member to take advantage of the biggest discounts on Prime Day. You can sign up or renew your membership below. Usually, new Prime members can also access a free 30-day membership trial to test out its perks.

Bank Holiday mattress deals

Bank Holiday mattress deals also offer another opportunity to shop for less. From the end of June into July, and often throughout August, retailers may cut prices again. August Bank Holiday mattress deals can see particularly low prices, as the last UK Bank Holiday of the year is often a key time for consumer spending.
